The "Golden Age" of movies has long passed.
When the movie industry was more selective, there were movies with more meaning and substance. The combination of modern technology and a huge decrease in the average person's intelligence has made making movies like "Meet the Spartans" and "Disaster Movie" possible. Fortunately, after years of practice, I've been able to discern the trash from the movies that might have at least some promise. Back in the day there wasn't the stream of coverage we have for movies today. Mass media and advertising made it possible for terrible, terrible films to be made, released, and consumed by the public. It is also nearly impossible to go see a "comedy" nowadays without boobs showing up at least once or twice. The humor would still be received without a topless woman delivering it.
